Bane ho ek khaak se, by Soudamini Bose

The Power of One

United by our innocence, we are all born equal. And then, as time passes, our souls get divided horizontally and vertically into religion, caste, class…

Woh hi jaan woh hi tan, kahan talak chhupaoge…
Woh hi jaan woh hi tan, kahan talak chhupaoge…
Pahan ke reshmi libaaz, tum badal na jaaoge…
Ke ek zaat hain sabhi, ke ek zaat hain sabhi…
Toh baat hai ajeeb kya?
Lahu ka rang ek hai, ameer kya gareeb kya?
Bane ho ek khaak se

I would like to bow down before the creators of this masterpiece’…
-Majrooh for his simple yet hard hitting message…
-Roshan for understanding the importance of these words and letting them take precedence…
-Director Phani Majumdar for his vision in giving Meena Kumari centre-stage, dressed in white, the color of purity…as clean and pure as a newborn baby’s heart.
-and finally Lata for her crystal clear vocals. For making this song her own. For letting her emotions show when she sings, “toh baat hain ajeeb kya?” This one line is a killer for me…

PS: Do notice the slight echo effect “Ke ek baadshah hua, to sau fakir ho gaye”. It’s almost as if her voice is echoing in the vacant spaces of a palace.

PPS: This album has now become #1 in my list…

PPPS: I’ve spent the entire day thinking about what to write.. nothing I say can describe the beauty of this song. That’s how totally overwhelmed am I…
